Born in Kumamoto and now based in Tokyo, Janis Crunch was drawn to the piano like a moth to a flame. From a young age, she was steeped in the classical world, her fingers becoming fluent in its language. She sharpened her skills at a renowned music university in Tokyo, but it wasn’t in the grand concert halls where Janis would first make her mark. Instead, it was in the quiet, intimate spaces between collaborations where Janis began to find her true voice.
Her partnership with haruka nakamura became a pivotal moment in her evolution. Janis’s vocals became a defining element of nakamura’s first two albums in grace (2008) and twilight (2010), threading a deep, ethereal presence throughout the albums.
2011 marked a transformative year in Janis’s career. She released 12 & 1 SONG, a collaboration with nakamura, through KITCHEN. LABEL, and also unveiled her solo piano album, I Just Love the Piano (RONDADE). This album was more than just a collection of pieces — it was an extension of Janis herself, an intimate reflection of her love for the piano. In this work, the piano wasn’t just an instrument; it was her voice, her companion, her universe.
