LUCA

JAPAN

LUCA, a singer-songwriter, was born in Berkeley, California, but her sound has found its true home in Japan. Her vocal expressions have graced the work of iconic composer Ryuichi Sakamoto on his album async. In more recent years, LUCA has continued to evolve musically, building a series of mesmerizing collaborations with There is a fox and, most notably, with haruka nakamura.

Beginning in 2017, LUCA’s partnership with nakamura saw her voice become an integral presence in a variety of projects. Among them, Hitsujigusa — a limited, CD-only release made in conjunction with the brand of the same name — remains one of the most elusive and cherished works, unavailable on streaming platforms, heightening its ethereal quality.

After collaborating with various artists, her latest solo album Japanese old folk songs – A bouquet of the meadow – was released in summer of 2020.

Later in the same year, the duo LUCA & haruka nakamura, known to their Japanese listeners as arca, finally released their first album together, the world, through KITCHEN. LABEL — a heart-centering spiritual folk elegy and hazy lyrical path towards oneness with the self and the world.

LUCA’s musical journey mirrors the nomadic nature of her life — having lived in places as diverse as California, Denmark, and Paris — before settling in Kyoto. Her music reflects a life lived between worlds: constantly evolving, never quite tethered, and always on the edge of discovery.
